Shalom Bayit and a Smoothie for Shabbat

Shalom Bayit and a Smoothie for Shabbat

I went to my first Shabbat dinner at my friend Monica’s on Friday. It was so much more than dinner I can honestly say it was an experience. And like any Gentile with a laptop, I spent some time reading about Shabbat on Wikipedia 🙂

Monica makes homemade challah every week and for this week’s main dish she made her favorite Moroccan lentils since it’s vegetarian. She wouldn’t let me bring any food but said I could bring whatever I wanted for smoothies.

Stella!

I really like the berry/stone fruit combos so I brought frozen blueberries and fresh apricots, which I prefer to the more common raspberry/peach combo.

Their little girl loves smoothies and asked for seconds. Here’s a picture of Stella drinking her second helping of kale, raw ginger, blueberries, apricots and strawberries. And she even said Please!

She was very participatory in making the smoothie and had questions about every ingredient. She’s two and a half and it made my heart soar to hear her say, “I like kale.” I didn’t know what kale was or that it existed until I was in my late 20s. Gotta love great parents and good little eaters 🙂
